Ju 52 for aviation fans
Hamburg’s residents all look up expectantly to the heavens when they hear the familiar drone of the silver Junkers Ju 52 with its historic registration code D-AQUI (today D-CDLH) overhead. The three-engined aeroplane, which everyone, not just insiders, affectionately calls “Auntie Ju”, represents the very beginnings of the age of modern passenger aviation. Built by the Junkers factory in Dessau for Lufthansa, this particular plane flew for the airline until mid-1936. To date, the grand dame of aviation has flown over 126,000 passengers since being reconditioned in 1986. The Ju 52 is serviced by the Deutsche Lufthansa Berlin Foundation in Lufthansa Technik’s hangars at Hamburg Airport.
In late 2002 aviation experts set up the “Friends of the Lufthansa Ju 52” club in honour of this historic aircraft. The club’s mission is to maintain this vintage aeroplane’s flightworthiness and functionality, both on the ground and in the air, as well as to provide a forum for aviation fans from all over Germany. New members are always very welcome.
