    8. Hamburg Aviation Conference

The Changing Face of Global Aviation
Changes in the travel market demand new strategies – competition will become even more intense

The eighth Hamburg Aviation Conference, a summit drawing together experts, scientists and renowned leaders of the travel industry, takes place in Hamburg from February 16 - 18, 2005. Against the backdrop of a growing leisure travel market and intensified competition, new strategies will be evolved for airlines, airports and travel firms. Around 200 specialists are expected from Europe, the USA, Canada and South-East Asia.

The primary growth in the worldwide travel market is in the leisure travel segment, driven by low-cost operators. Whilst benefiting from their market strength, low-cost operators have to deal simultaneously with more concentrated competition, numerous new airline launches and high pressure on profit margins. These factors, along with the development of new distribution models in the travel sector, already indicate a significant change for the industry as a whole in Europe, North America and Asia.

The internet will play an ever-growing role. Changing consumer behaviour, along with the increasing demand for individually structured flight and accommodation packages with up-to-the-minute prices, create great challenges for the whole industry. It is doubtful whether the package tour, so loved by Germans, has a future. This is of decisive importance for the future development of airports' non-aviation activities, where the service offering must be built around the precise needs of these customer groups. Only by planning now, with an eye to the future, can an organisation be sure to benefit from the growth that experts predict. The traditional charter airlines are battling with the new low-fare carriers for market share and travel operators are looking for ways to keep selling their customers complete leisure travel packages.

The various approaches and viewpoints will be presented by the keynote speakers, such internationally recognised experts as Professor David Gillen (University of Berkeley, California), Dr. Michael Tretheway (InterVISTAS Vancouver, Canada), Professor Martin Dresner (University of Maryland), Professor Peter Morell (Cranfield University) and Professor Ann Graham (University of Westminster, UK).

The Hamburg Aviation Conference is being organised by Hamburg Airport in conjunction with the Department of Economy and Labour of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. This unique gathering of aviation and travel experts has been monitoring the latest trends in aviation and influencing fundamental decisions within the industry for eight years.

The conference languages are German and English, with simultaneous translation available. The registration fee is 360 euros per person; students pay a reduced fee of 50 euros. Conference programmes and registration forms are available from Ms. Heidi Back, Hamburg Airport, 22331 Hamburg or by e-mail: hamburg-aviation-conference@ham.airport.de
